  • US 301 By-Pass Value Engineering, Florence County, SC

This project consists of the construction of US 301 bridge over Jeffries Creek. It is Value Engineering encroached on a parcel of land belonging to the City of Florence's sewage treatment plant. Directly in the path of the foundation were three sewer lines of significant size, all with prior rights and a sizeable relocation cost. Engineering investigations revealed that based on the flood elevation, the bridge could be significantly lower. At the same time, lengthening the bridge would move the end bent location and would leave the sewer lines in a space between the last two bents. This was presented as a Value Engineering proposal to the District 5 construction personnel. Since not relocating the sewer lines could potentially save the project hundreds of thousands of dollars, they agreed with the concept and gave the approval to the proposal. CSC produced a full set of roadway drawings for a redesigned vertical profile that met SCDOT design parameters and avoided relocation of major utilities. We saved the City of Florence $855,150.48 through value engineering on the entire project.
